  • Why FIVE Commissioners?

Why not just three? Commissioner Sorenson doesn't ever come to work unless he can be on TV (meetings), so there must not be much to do. Why not cut back to just three of them? The county has lost about 400 employees since the 1970s, but they have gained two commissioners. It wont make much difference, but it would save a couple hundred thousand

  • Re: Lane Co. jail to cut capacity by 20%

This is a great idea, and I've heard it discussed repeatedly, but it's never going to happen. Here's why: 1) There are NINE police agencies in Lane County -- mostly because every little municipality wants to have it's own stamp on the personality of its police department. Even Coburg, now down to two officers, elected to keep it's own department ...

  • Re: Public Trust

Well, Mr. Handy won, barely, but he won. During an election night TV interview he said, ''We've got to get more police officers on the street and do a better job with our roads!'' That's been woven into his campaign shpeel from beginning to end. It isn't going to happen, of course, because the county doesn't have the money to make it happen ...

  • Re: Third officer-involved shooting in two weeks!

At the risk of feeding a troll, I'll bite... Mr. Spring, I have to assume this is all unknown to you because you're not reading the newspaper (the only one we have here), watching the news, or watching the county hearings that have been linked and discussed in other recent threads on this site. To help you along, the paper is ''The Register ...

  • Re: Rob Handy was scary-clueless!

rgl1345:He won didn't he?? in spite of the inbred trolls I think you meant, ''...BECAUSE of the inbred trolls.'' :) We have a new State Treasurer too. The guy who won was recommended by nobody. He was a Republican, then changed to Independent, then changed to Democrat, all in less than five years. He was repeatedly in the news for sexually ...

  • Re: Third officer-involved shooting in two weeks!

Actually, Mr. Spring, according to the presiding judge and the paper, many of the recent crimes, including two of the recent homicides, were committed by people who were released prematurely from the Lane County jail. (For a specific example, that Wesley guy is charged with a recent murder, and he's the one who was shot a few weeks back when he ...

  • Re: This is truly a sad day for the USA...

Here's another problem: Obama will bring back the death tax. The idea is to take 50% or more of everything I earn as I earn it, and then grab half of whatever is left (or more) when I die. That means the government will always take at least 75% of whatever I earn during my lifetime. It can't be much worse in Europe, cause there's only 25% ...

  • Re: This is truly a sad day for the USA...

Thanks for the advice, and I don't intend to jump into anything, but I have an accountant, and a better grasp then you might think. First, we don't get to deduct all of our costs, just qualified costs, so we'll be taxed on much of the money that isn't really take home money, just as Oregon taxes me on income I've already paid in taxes to the ...

  • Re: This is truly a sad day for the USA...

OregonWoods:...Finally, I think people are confusing their socialism with their communism. I think that's right. As Obama said in several speeches before he realized he had any chance of being a presidential contender, he means to redistribute the wealth. ''Joe the Plumber'' will lose, because his gross income is on the wrong side of Obama's ...
