Why do Rotties get such a bad rap?

I have owned many rotties all my life, and many people are so negative towards them. Most apartments won't take them. They are great animals!!!

Aside from the perception of aggressiveness --  Aren't they a little big to be an apartment dog?

I think all dog types are only as good as thier owners.

The media isn't interested in any good news about a dog who behaves.

They want to report on when a dog does bad (as a result of not being trained properly by the owner).

Bigger dogs do more damage when they attack or bite.  When's the last time you saw a story about a chihuahua that had to be put down for mauling a 10 year old?

As a result bigger dogs who behave badly are what gets reported.  It SEEMS to be a lot of Rotties, but again, the media picks and chooses which stories to run (sensationalize).

I love rotties too and my husband swears we will get another one some day. However, you have to be careful with them. Ours would nip at any kids my children brought home and actually bit a child of a freind of mine. We didn't raise this dog from a pup though and maybe that was the difference. We found him a home with someone who didn't have kids. They are great guard dogs that is for sure!

Um... It's not just about size.

    It's about propensity.

Google "dog bite frequency by breed" and "dog's most likely to kill". Lots of dogs bite, few kill, though most large breeds are perfectly capable of it.

The most popular breeds, by far, are the retrievers (Labrador) and (Golden), both medium-to-large breeds. Each of them outnumbers the Rottie in popularity -- by a lot. Collectively, they VASTLY outnumber the Rottie, so there are many more of them out there interacting with people (more bite opportunities). If all breeds were equally likely to bite, you'd expect the retriever-bites to outnumber Rottie-bites about twenty or thirty to one. Nope. Rotties and Pits are not only more likely to bite people, they are MUCH more likely to KILL people, and it's not because Dobermans, Labs, Shepherds and Malamutes can't.

You might also want to Google "dog intelligence by breed". It's interesting.
