    Beauty and the Geek

TV is a wasteland. There is little doubt. But sometimes even TV will slam into something powerful and thought provoking. When one looks thru the blather to see what is revealed within....this can be big stuff.

I feel this is true for a reality program called "Beauty and the Geek".  THIS is thought provoking.

This event is staged with ravashing young women who have made their way in this world based on their looks. Then they are paired with young men who are the classic "Geek", (Trekkys - Computer Nerds - Sword and Sorcery types). They then compete in various trials which play against type. The Geeks are challanged on fashion, social skills and "girl stuff". The girls are challanged on intellect and "boy stuff".

Watching the interplay twixt these groups (which carefully avoid each other in real life) is most revealing.

One of the things that stands out for me is how perfectly this event confirms the old saw....

    Power corrupts

We see, perfectly, how (especially for women) beauty is power and that for everyone - power corrupts. So many of these girls have been actually devastated by the corrosive effects of their looks. In some cases the woman inside was made as repulsive as the outer woman was attractive. This plays in bold relief against the unwieldy geeks.

But it seems there are untold life lessons revealed in this program.

Any other observations on the lessons revealed in Beauty and the Beast; or of the nature of the corruption of power in our individual lives?

An ascendant man, living in a degenerate age, MUST, by definition, live in contradistinction to his times.

    Re: Beauty and the Geek

We watch the show at our house, but I must profess we don't go quite as deep analyzing the show.  After the last episode our conversation was more in the "I cannot believe she is making out with the meathead."

But I agree that you can see power corrupting people.  For instance in this season when the two people were able to pick the teams, and could have put everyone together with their best fits, and instead chose people they probably wouldn't get along with to try and give themselves an edge in winning the game.

It's also interesting to see the Will character start to let winning the challenges go to his head, and when he is called on it, his reaction was comical.  He right away attempted to feign sorrow that anyone would think about him in that way.

Of all the reality shows, this one seems to have characters who aren't acting.
