Need help w a crime police won't help

about 3 weeks ago my husband and I came home to find my best friends ex husband had broken into our house. My best friend had moved the week before out of state.
We pulled into our driveway to find him on our front steps with our stuff in his hands. He threw down the stuff and threatened both of us in our driveway. My husband called 911 while all this way going on. he sped off in his car and returned about 10 minutes later and just sat if front of our driveway in his car. We called the police a again. About an hour later they showed up, took pictures of our broken door and statement.
They called him and told him to stop. that was all
now today i ran into this person again- he threatened me and said
"your stupid cause you'll never know when i'll show up again"
called the detective in charge of the case nothing he could do since he never said " i'll beat you up"
and today the DA will not follow up on the case- even though we had two witnesses that saw him on our step with our stuff
    what should i do?

Re: Need help w a crime police won't help

Call THE DA or his first assistant. (Not one of the deputies).

If the crime happened outside of municipal limits, and nobody was actually injured, you're probably out of luck, as they probably will not have the staff to investigate it. The Sheriff has gone from 18 detectives to only 4 because of years of budget cuts, so they can't even keep up with the violent felony crimes. (Our cars were smashed and stuff was stolen. Now when that happens the Sheriff's office just mails a report to fill out "for insurance purposes".) (It probably wouldn't matter even if the Sheriff DID investigate, because what's left of the jail will not hold low-level felony offenders.)

The DA used to be able to augment investigative support with his own DA-detectives, but they've been cut too. There were 11 DA-detectives in 1980. Now there is only 1. Next year there may be none, I suppose, as the Lane County citizens cut law enforcement funding every time they get a chance.

Look at the bright side: they're building more parks in Eugene, the Library is kept open for extended hours, and they have PLENTY of staff on the Eugene Human Rights commission. (I'm not sure what essential services the "commission" provides to the citizens...)

They were probably all at the donut shop. Read the EPD and county police logs and see how many times they do not have any units to respond. Way to many. Piss poor departments because joe public wont spend the money for more cops. Cant blame them, the ones they already have are not the best.

    Money Matters

    Eugene, Oregon Lane County

Money matters. Spanky keeps reminding how our County commissioners have dismantled our law enforcement department and police forces. Our new jail was built but not funded. Lane County sheriffs will not come to a crime scene unless it is a certain type of crime. How can we reverse this?

Eugene and Lane County run on visitor dollars. They will be hosting an Olympic preliminary event in 2008, therefore by putting in the identifying words Eugene, Oregon and Lane County in your posts, blogs and websites when you complain about what the city of Eugene, Oregon and the Lane County Commissioners your posts will be displayed when visitors Google Eugene, Oregon or Lane County.  When they get to this forum, they will see that no official has seen it necessary to reply to any of the posts. They built the jail because it is profitable to the contractor, they keep it empty because theft causes repeat sales.

    Needs to read more closely

New jail? Are you referring to the one built in the 1970s and remodeled slightly in the mid-nineties? Lane County's OLD jail is roughly HALF the size the architect calculated as necessary to hold the criminals based upon the size of the county population and the crime volume THEN (1970s).

Then the county population exploded and a gazzillion California criminals moved up to Oregon along with the rest of their neighbors.

Then the county revenue went away, and costs went up... twenty-five years in a row... so the county alternated between eliminating positions in law enforcement, closing sections of the jail and renting jail capacity out to other agencies and governments. Today the Lane County jail is capable of holding 500 inmates, but 20% of the capacity is closed entirely because the Sheriff can't afford to operate it, another 20% of the capacity is leased to the federal government to house regional federal criminals, and another 5% to 10% is leased to the cities of Eugene and Springfield to hold their lower level criminals. That leaves Lane County with use of about half of the jail that was about half the size it needed to be to meet 1970s demands. That leaves Lane County with enough jail space to meet 25% of the 1970s need -- or about 15% of what is needed to meet the need today! Yeah!

    Yeah, good point.

Or were you talking about the Serbu youth campus. That facility actually IS relatively new, and, if it was staffed, it would be adequate to meet the demonstrated need. At least that was true before the California gangs came up here, but now that Eugene is having drive-by-shootings and other youth gang-violence it may not be enough to open it up which, of course, isn't going to happen anyway.

For those of you normal folks thinking about moving I can tell you that Bend, Oregon is a pretty nice place. It shares some of the nicer Eugene characteristics. It even has some of that friendly "People's Republik of Eugene" feel. Of course there are almost none of us Oregonians left over here... But the Californians DO fund law enforcement, just as they do in California, so, over here anyway, the loonies are not running the asylum anymore :-)

Want some cheese with that whine?

Were you the complainant, or just a curious bystander? If you're just curious about what happened or didn't happen, I'm not surprised they didn't respond to your inquiry. If you were the injured party, what exactly was the crime you were reporting?

Re: Need help w a crime police won't help

CRIME? It is a crime too see all the crime and have no one listen to the truth about this city 1964 was a good year I came here many moons ago. Look as I have said before we are not going to changeuntil we U+KNITE together and fight the real issues. The slackers on the police force are the ones who don't want the town to change we have allowed a bad force too come into this town. we as the eugene citizens are spinning our wheels to get justice and decency back into Our Town Look to the history of the town. 1972 to hone in on a date, find out in the old newspapers what really happened back then. 1974 was another year that was real bad for the bad guys to get a foot hold here.
so ask yourself why? and keep digging for the truth, We do have GOOD HONORABLE PEOPLE WHO WORK FOR US IN THE POLICE FORCE>
But the bad guys have a lot of money too throw around. and the influance of Greed puts the good guys at a disadvantage. Follow the money my freinds. and learn  about  how it used to be when the good guys were in control. I would rather see the pot heads be left alone and teh H.. drug taken back to where ever it was imported from.
and they are working on this issue. Take heed and look around.. the wheels of change are happening now. with the help of the international community.. I want the FBI guys who used to be in EPD to take over just for a few months until the job is done and we have our city back.. the sooner the better. I am tried of this crap, too many lives are destroyed for the greed of lust of Money.. The corruption runs deeper than you know.
You see I watch I listen. I keep my secrets close..to my heart of hearts. When the time comes my photographic memories well who started this anyway? SAVE OUR CITY report the abuse of Power ( COLOR OF LAW UNDER THE PRENTENCE OF AUTHORITY) The police/FBI work for you. So show the decency to file the complaints politically to the top dog in SALEM.. The pen is mighter than the sword?
ANd to all our military friends in town Thank you for the support, and to all the international friends of mine including my cousins from ALASKA thank you for helping clean this city up. And my uncle who happens to work for a california Newpaper Thank you for being there for the rest of my friends in Eugene.. Change is already a quarter of the way there.. anyone who had a thought that money could sway the goodness of our Big Heart of the PEOPLE OF EUGENE? well Hmmm sorry about that.. we can't be bought off.. we stand for more than you will ever know. and that is that LOVE ALWAYS WINS!!!!!!

I say forget the cops.  Take it into your own hands.  Be heard.  If he wants to threaten you, make sure he's too scared to do it again.  With the lack of funding that law enforcement has now it's time for citizens to take a stand, show these low-life criminals that we're not going to take it.  Who the hell is he to show up at your house, try to rob you and then threaten you when caught?  Stand up for yourself if the law won't.

I totally agree. If the law enforcement community cannot or will not do the job that we the people have entrusted them to do, then all bets are off. The first law of nature is the right to self defense, meaning you do not have to ask permission to protect yourself.

    X3

That's why concealed gun licenses are selling like hot cakes!

We've installed an alarm system and I now keep a gun by my bed. I've had it!

I read that the Lane County Sheriff used to have an average of ten or eleven patrol cars out on a shift and over 20 detectives investigating violent crimes, but now he's down to two patrol cars per shift and only TWO detectives are left. Two! The jail is basically closed, the DA has lost all his investigators and many of his deputies, and the citizens of Eugene are just fine with all of it.

I called my county commissioner to complain, for all the good it will do. He said they're leaning towards saving the timber money so they can maintain todays lousy protection levels for a few years before the next round of layoffs! Unbelievable -- and he's STILL talking about funding the animal shelter and the extension service again!!

I'm going to protect my own now. As long as I'm living here we're going to be armed and alarmed!

Re: Need help w a crime police won't help

You're right to think in terms of protecting yourselves, as it looks like your public safety challenges are not going to get any better. I just read that several of your commissioners, notably commissioner Fleenor, want to use most of the declining (and then evaporating) timber money to buy down long term costs. Apparently, they have decided that the citizens there are never going to fund normal safety services, so they're "battening down the hatches" to get by without additional funding. Doing that would reportedly allow the county to remain in the present level of decay for two or three more years before the next round of lay-offs which will likely kill patrol services entirely and reduce the DA to going after only the most violent criminals. You'll be the only jurisdiction in the USA where car theft isn't punished. (You're probably already the only jurisdiction in the USA where rural burglaries and car thefts are no longer investigated, bicycle thefts and other thefts under $1,000 are not prosecuted, and career property felons can't be held due to lack of jail space.)

I recommend a 12 gauge shotgun as the best home-defense weapon: they are easy to shoot successfully with minimum training... I just worry about little kids, as they will play with guns if they have access. Please be careful to keep the guns away from kids and others without proper safety training.
