    Holly Pollination

The little woman would like a few Holly trees in the yard for making wreaths at Christmas.  The guy down at Decker Nursery said that the English Holly is the classic for wreaths.  So I bought one female and have it planted near the fence off to the west of the house.  Woulda bought 2 cause I understand a male must be present for the female to produce berrys.  Couldn't locate a Male in Deckers stock.  So I still haven't procured that male yet.  My Question is......

Do I really need an ENGLISH holly to pollinate an English holly?  Understand these things can grow pretty big and I'd rather not have to wrangle another big shrub/tree if I don't have to.

    UPDATE:

When trying to come up with some more escollonia to complete my hedge, stopped in to Rodgers Nursury.  Came up empty on the shrubs, but asked about the Holly pollination issue.  The lady called somebody on a handheld and he maintained that an English holly would be required to pollinate an English holly.

Anybody who agrees or disagrees - please lets hear from you.

According to this guy : http://www.walterreeves.com/landscaping/article.phtml?cat=13&id=344 American Holly can fertilize English Holly.

I have a Holly tree in my yard that might be a male. At least I've never seen it produce berries. I'll check when I get home and if it is you can try cloning it if you like.

[edit] Yea it is a male english holly Ilex aquifolium L.

apparently they are commercially grown around here so some male sapplings are probably available at one of the many nurseries.

That's a powerfully interesting link you found there, Annexed!  Thanks for taking the time to share it with me.

As late in the spring as it is getting, I'm thinking that I'll try to get that Male next year.  But now I'll know to look for "Gold Coast" too.

    Thanks again for the Heads-Up!

    Re: Holly Pollination

Well, I sunk a Gold Coast into that spot reserved for the male Holly.  It's got some pretty leaves for the wife to weave into wreaths come Christmas.  That site maintains that Gold Coast can pollinate English Holly too.  So I should be set.

He's small and still cost $37.   Good thing he's got lotsa time to grow.  Time
