    Angry [:@] I'm seeing RED

Last I knew, red lights only meant "SPEED UP" after you crossed into California. However, the trend has seemed to move up north to our lovely city of Eugene. Angry

My son started preschool last fall, which has me traveling on roads that I previously didn't frequent as much. My route is pretty straightforward, travel up River Road/Chambers to 19th, and back. I'm always seeing 1, 2 or sometimes even 3 or more cars running the red light at 6th & Chambers on my way to school.

However, that isn't the worst location. For me, the worst is as I head North on Chambers @ 7th street. I always see at least 1 vehicle running the red light here. Frequently (and, in my opinion, the worst offenders) there are larger trucks hauling a trailer or two. I've had at least 3 occasions where I was sitting first at the light, in the right lane, started out at a green light, and had to SLAM on my breaks to avoid hitting a car that decided the red light didn't apply to him/her (I couldn't see what the traffic was doing because of a large vehicle in the left hand lane - I have now stated to let the left lane go first).

I would like to see the community made aware of these dangerous drivers (TAKE THEIR PICTURES AS THEY RUN THE LIGHT AND SHOW IT ON THE NEWS - Please!). If enough awareness is brought to this problem area, then we can avoid a fatal, and completely unnecessary, crash. If the community is aware, then the cops will start staging stings in the area more frequently (heck - these tickets should pay for the officers to sit there!). And, if it continues to be such a problem area, maybe they can add a warning light 20 feet back...? Who knows... It just takes making the community aware... Automobile

    SAHM2two:

Indeed this topic has been spotlighted in the local new lately.

I personally would like to see the camera system put into place.  But it won't happen in Eugene. As you will read in other forums here, few in Eugene back any kind of law enforcement enhancement or updating.

Adding a warning light 20 feet back will only give the drivers more reaction time to speed up so they can get where thye are going faster.

I predict that Springfield will have traffic light cameras well before Eugene.  Just another reason I'm glad I live in Springfield.  Now if I can only find that perfect job in Springfield where I didn't have to come to Eugene at all......    (I'm working on it).

We actually did a story about a month ago on running red lights.  We caught cars running red lights on 7th and Chambers, just like you mentioned.

You can watch the story by clicking here.

Red does seem to to mean speed up. From the start of school i have been within 3 inches of being hit by a car while riding my bike or walking to school.

    Re: I'm seeing RED

This touches on one of my 'pet peeves' with law enforcement: Why do cops spend their time along straight stretches of road, waiting for speeders - instead of sitting at intersections, looking for 'red light runners'. Speeding can be unsafe, but running a red light is almost attempted murder. I'm sure the tickets for each are comparable, if revenue is a issue. I see at least four cops a day looking for speeders, but I don't remember EVER seeing one sitting near an intersection.

    Re: I'm seeing RED

They can quickly pay for the cameras  by puting the Traffic Team
at West 11th and McKinley but that wont happen as you hardly see any cop in this area.
