Need help w a crime police won't help

about 3 weeks ago my husband and I came home to find my best friends ex husband had broken into our house. My best friend had moved the week before out of state.
We pulled into our driveway to find him on our front steps with our stuff in his hands. He threw down the stuff and threatened both of us in our driveway. My husband called 911 while all this way going on. he sped off in his car and returned about 10 minutes later and just sat if front of our driveway in his car. We called the police a again. About an hour later they showed up, took pictures of our broken door and statement.
They called him and told him to stop. that was all
now today i ran into this person again- he threatened me and said
"your stupid cause you'll never know when i'll show up again"
called the detective in charge of the case nothing he could do since he never said " i'll beat you up"
and today the DA will not follow up on the case- even though we had two witnesses that saw him on our step with our stuff
    what should i do?

Re: Need help w a crime police won't help

Call THE DA or his first assistant. (Not one of the deputies).

If the crime happened outside of municipal limits, and nobody was actually injured, you're probably out of luck, as they probably will not have the staff to investigate it. The Sheriff has gone from 18 detectives to only 4 because of years of budget cuts, so they can't even keep up with the violent felony crimes. (Our cars were smashed and stuff was stolen. Now when that happens the Sheriff's office just mails a report to fill out "for insurance purposes".) (It probably wouldn't matter even if the Sheriff DID investigate, because what's left of the jail will not hold low-level felony offenders.)

The DA used to be able to augment investigative support with his own DA-detectives, but they've been cut too. There were 11 DA-detectives in 1980. Now there is only 1. Next year there may be none, I suppose, as the Lane County citizens cut law enforcement funding every time they get a chance.

Look at the bright side: they're building more parks in Eugene, the Library is kept open for extended hours, and they have PLENTY of staff on the Eugene Human Rights commission. (I'm not sure what essential services the "commission" provides to the citizens...)

They were probably all at the donut shop. Read the EPD and county police logs and see how many times they do not have any units to respond. Way to many. Piss poor departments because joe public wont spend the money for more cops. Cant blame them, the ones they already have are not the best.

    Money Matters

    Eugene, Oregon Lane County

Money matters. Spanky keeps reminding how our County commissioners have dismantled our law enforcement department and police forces. Our new jail was built but not funded. Lane County sheriffs will not come to a crime scene unless it is a certain type of crime. How can we reverse this?

Eugene and Lane County run on visitor dollars. They will be hosting an Olympic preliminary event in 2008, therefore by putting in the identifying words Eugene, Oregon and Lane County in your posts, blogs and websites when you complain about what the city of Eugene, Oregon and the Lane County Commissioners your posts will be displayed when visitors Google Eugene, Oregon or Lane County.  When they get to this forum, they will see that no official has seen it necessary to reply to any of the posts. They built the jail because it is profitable to the contractor, they keep it empty because theft causes repeat sales.

    Needs to read more closely

New jail? Are you referring to the one built in the 1970s and remodeled slightly in the mid-nineties? Lane County's OLD jail is roughly HALF the size the architect calculated as necessary to hold the criminals based upon the size of the county population and the crime volume THEN (1970s).

Then the county population exploded and a gazzillion California criminals moved up to Oregon along with the rest of their neighbors.

Then the county revenue went away, and costs went up... twenty-five years in a row... so the county alternated between eliminating positions in law enforcement, closing sections of the jail and renting jail capacity out to other agencies and governments. Today the Lane County jail is capable of holding 500 inmates, but 20% of the capacity is closed entirely because the Sheriff can't afford to operate it, another 20% of the capacity is leased to the federal government to house regional federal criminals, and another 5% to 10% is leased to the cities of Eugene and Springfield to hold their lower level criminals. That leaves Lane County with use of about half of the jail that was about half the size it needed to be to meet 1970s demands. That leaves Lane County with enough jail space to meet 25% of the 1970s need -- or about 15% of what is needed to meet the need today! Yeah!

    Yeah, good point.

Or were you talking about the Serbu youth campus. That facility actually IS relatively new, and, if it was staffed, it would be adequate to meet the demonstrated need. At least that was true before the California gangs came up here, but now that Eugene is having drive-by-shootings and other youth gang-violence it may not be enough to open it up which, of course, isn't going to happen anyway.

For those of you normal folks thinking about moving I can tell you that Bend, Oregon is a pretty nice place. It shares some of the nicer Eugene characteristics. It even has some of that friendly "People's Republik of Eugene" feel. Of course there are almost none of us Oregonians left over here... But the Californians DO fund law enforcement, just as they do in California, so, over here anyway, the loonies are not running the asylum anymore :-)

Want some cheese with that whine?

Were you the complainant, or just a curious bystander? If you're just curious about what happened or didn't happen, I'm not surprised they didn't respond to your inquiry. If you were the injured party, what exactly was the crime you were reporting?
