The Day After Election Day

So here's my take on the election results.  Full disclosure I voted in the Republican Primary.

Obama vs Hillary:  Nothing surprising as Obama wins by 16% in Oregon and Hillary wins in Kentucky.  They have pretty much solidified their base, with Obama among the college educated, and Hillary among the blue collar working class.

McCain vs Ron Paul:  Again nothing surprising here with McCain getting 85%.  I think if Oregon had voted earlier in the primary race Paul might have gotten an even higher percentage of the vote.  I think his hands off, libertarian style appeals to the Oregonian mindset.

Gordon Smith vs Gordon Leitch:  Battle of the Gordon's!  Interesting to see Leitch get about the same percentage as Ron Paul.  Personally I wasn't happy with Gordon Smith when he stood with the Bush Administration over the wiretapping issue.

Piercy vs Torrey:  Very close race results in a November run off.  I see this as very bad news for Piercy.  Even though it is touted as a non-partisan race, and Torrey now touts himself as independent, is there any doubt how these two line up?  The Democratic vote was energized as they came out to vote for either Obama or Hillary.  I see a higher percentage of Republicans showing up in November then voted in May primary with their presidential candidate already decided.  Seems like those voters would trend towards Torrey.  On the other hand Torrey hitched his bandwagon pretty hard on Obama (Yes, Eugene, we can), will the independent perception hold up through November?

Secretary of State:  I was surprised to see incumbent Vicki Walker only get 18%.  We won't be seeing the Lane County battle of Walker vs Dancer I thought we would see.  Dancer is probably in trouble as he has to now run against a Portland native.  With the large Portland voting block he is going to have to become well known in that area very quickly.

Lane County Commisioner:  Bobby Green cannot be happy with having to run again in November.  All eyes will be on him now as the County deals with the public saftey funding issues.  Will he come out of it looking like a hero, or will Handy have fuel for October attack ads?
